Back by popular demand after a highly successful run in March, the Hudson Reed Ensembleʼs production of “Barrymoore” is a witty and fascinating portrayal of John Barrymoore, a member of the famous Barrymoore acting dynasty and grandfather of screen actress Drew Barrymoore. Barrymore shared the screen with such greats as Jean Harlow and Joan Crawford. On stage he became an international sensation in the 1920ʼs and ʻ30ʼs due primarily to his portrayals of Richard III and Hamlet.
Set in 1942, and no longer a box office sensation, Barrymore attempts to bring some of the magic back by renting an old theatre to rehearse his 1920 Broadway hit, “Richard III.” Acclaimed the greatest actor of his generation, Barrymore’s rise to superstardom and subsequent decline is one of the legendary tragedies of Hollywood.
